Exquisite Corpse
Typically written in 4 line sections, exquisite corpse is a good first excercise. have the kids start the excercise by doing it row by row, during class. Each kid has a 4 minute limit to write their lines. Break up the the kids into teams other ways, but give incentives and get kids to race to see who gets done first or ends up with the coolest descriptions, ect...
Exquisite Character Corpse
Start by describing a person; tell a funny story, talk about their criminal history, their family. each person describes this character in a single way, possibly on their own page or even in their own wiki.
Germinating Idea:
Sally has a pigeon coop of about 30 pigeons. Not just dirty old grey homing pigeons, but fantail pigeons with their tails splayes like peacocks, rust-colored rollers that do flips in the air- and Sally thinks that it's those flips that help them avoid the red-tailed hawk in her neighborhood. most of her dirty homers get picked off by the predator. Her dad figured it was about 6 or 7 birds every year, but the birds had so many chicks that it by the next year there were more than enough to make up for the previous year's loss.

Licorice was one of Sally's homering pigeons, solid greyish black with the iridescent purple and green halo of feathers around her neck. she was too smart to be caught by the red tailed hawk, she in fact died years later in an unfortunate drowning accident , but that is another story. Licorice was a beautiful pigeon and of course smart like most pigeons are. She was always by Sally, usually sitting on her shoulder.

when the bird sat on her shoulder, it was always pooping on her, so she always spread a small diaper there for accidents. The problem was Licorice always tried to climb to the other shoulder to poop, and this made for great slapstick. Every 15 minutes or so the bird jumped,shimmied, hopped and generally clawed it's way to the other side of Sally's shoulder.
Do a paired personal narrative of a student
Have kids partner up with somebody, and each person tells a story about themselves. Each kid will then go back to their netbooks and write as best as they can the story that they heard, or use the story they heard as inspiration for another story idea. write them in their netbooks for at the least ten minutes.
